Why I don’t let prospects supply the materials

Published

Why I really don’t want you supplying the materials.

OK there may be some instances where you ordering the materials is preferred by your trade, understand that these will be the exception and not the norm.

Here are the reasons why – I’m using an example of me performing an LED downlight installation to give it context.

Selection

I know which materials I need for the job, not just the LED lights but the accessories and sundries such as sleeving, connectors, switches, hole saws etc.

If I’m not supplying the material, how do I know what else I’ll need to work with them and potential compatibility issues?

I also need to know the lights are suitable for the area being installed and how friendly they are to work with. Lower cost products usually take longer to install.

Convenience

If I need to specify the materials and spend time doing so, then I want to supply them and make a small margin by doing so – you won’t get them for less than I will.

I’ll take full responsibility for any errors on my part and any issues out of the box such as faulty or damaged.

Availability

You’re not going to find good quality materials at B&Q or Screwfix, you’ll need to order from an electrical wholesaler and that would involve you having an account – you can’t go through my account.

Service

If you order online and there’s a faulty product, how will you get it delivered the same day or next to get the job finished – they won’t care, you’re just a number and you’ll wait.

I have a great relationship with my suppliers – they’re quick to solve any issues to maintain this relationship.

When I supply – you benefit from this.

If you supply and I need to return to finish the work due to a material issue, that’s going to be an additional charge for you…

…when I have availability.

That’ll wipe out any savings you may have made and some, not considering inconvenience.

Find a qualified and well positioned trade and let them supply the materials – you’ll save time, money, unnecessary stress and find that a lot more trades are open to working with you.

Me – I generally don’t allow customers to supply materials, where I do I offer no warranty. This is whether it’s a LED downlight install as mentioned, or an EV charger installation
