EV charger installation by Norwich Electricians in Spixworth, Norwich.

Published

Homeowner contacted Norwich Electricians after they had spoken to a few installation companies – even having an appointment with 1 local firm the following week.

They had some concerns about the installation being rather tricky as the electrical intake was in the middle of the house, under the stairs, with no access to external walls.

I said if it could be done, we’d be able to do it, but would need to carry out an EV consultation to establish the specifics, advising there’d be a small charge for this.

Why should we pay you when the others don’t charge?

It’s a great question, if only more people asked the same question rather than dismissing it and looking for “free” advice which is worth just what you pay for it.

  • You can arrange a consultation at a time that suits you using our online calendar
  • You’ll get a fixed price quotation within 24 hours
  • You’ll meet your installer – we don’t send apprentices or sell the work on
  • You’ll see some EV chargers in-person and have a full understanding of what you’re committing to.
  • There’s no motive to mis-sell you something to cover the free time spent with you
  • AND you’ll be refunded in full if we cannot help you OR we go onto work together within 90 days

OK, let me speak to the Boss quickly

5 minutes later…

“Let’s do it”

Norwich Electricians attended 2 days later.

What we discussed

  • Where the charger could be mounted for minimal impact on the property aesthetics – without impacting access to the EV charger and being considerate to potential cable routes.
  • Chargers that were in keeping with the property – aesthetically pleasing but also convenient to use/access and whether a tethered or socketed EV charger would be a better fit.
  • Means of extending/improving the Wi-Fi connection where the charger was to be mounted.
  • Getting the supply from under the stairs to the front of the property and the implications of doing this.

What Norwich Electricians proposed

  • A tethered charger with a neat cable retainer – no need to unpack a charger cable from the boot of the car or a messy cable reel stuck onto the wall.
  • Mounting the EV charger on a side-facing wall and entering the charger back-entry – minimising the visual impact as you approach the property with no cable on show.
  • Installing a Wi-Fi network extender as part of the installation to ensure a stable and reliable internet connection for the charger.

What about the other company?

We’d answered all their questions and asked lot of our own.

Together built an agreed solution and promised a fixed quotation would follow.

Offered an installation date in 2 weeks.

Needless to say…

…they cancelled the ‘free’ quotation and instructed Norwich Electricians for the work.

And what about that cable route?

  • The carpet on the landing above the stairs and the adjacent bedroom would need to be lifted (by a third-party) to expose the floorboards/chipboard which would need to be cut, with any joists below to be drilled to allow a cable to pass through them.
  • Once the bedroom was passed it was into an accessible storage space in the roof over the front of the property where the cabling could run surface mounted to the joists and rafters.
  • Then it would travel between roof spaces and into the garage roof space where it could drop down inside the garage and back entry into the charger.

Outcome?

  • A subtle EV charger installation that didn’t detract from the property.
  • No visible cabling either inside or outside the property
  • No signs the carpets or subfloors had been accessed
  • An improved Wi-Fi connection to the front of property.

A very satisfied homeowner who said the following whilst we were on site.

“We really like your website – it’s very straight to the point and very human. Everything you say is true, a rarity”

Almost like we do what we say, groundbreaking huh?
