EV Ultra is an innovative cable designed and manufactured first by Doncaster Cables.
The cable has been specifically designed for electric vehicle charge points.
The cable is unique in that it incorporates both low voltage power conductors (230/400 volts) and extra low voltage data/telecoms cabling within 1 single cable.
To enable EV charger installations to be neater, faster to install and fully compliant with cable separation regulations at detailed in BS 7671.
With load management featuring in most EV chargers on the UK market there is a need for data transmission between the charger and the CT (Current transformer) which is fitted to the mains intake of the property – this enables the charger to balance its output depending on the load.
It’s also possible to hard wire an internet connection to the EV charger in situations where a Wi-Fi signal isn’t achievable.
Power cables (Band 1) should not be run in the same wiring system as telecoms and data cables (Band 2) unless all cables are rated at the highest voltage.
See regulation 528.1
“Except where one of the following methods is adopted, neither a Band I nor a Band II circuit shall be contained in the same wiring system as a circuit of nominal voltage exceeding that of low voltage, and a Band I circuit shall not be contained in the same wiring system as a Band II circuit. (i) – Every cable or conductor is insulated for the highest voltage present.“
Band 1 & Band 2 cables should be segregated to prevent unwanted electromagnetic force, as well as interference due to the different frequency ranges in which they both operate.
See regulation 528.2
“Special considerations of electrical interference, both electromagnetic and electrostatic, may apply to telecommunication circuits, data transfer circuits and the like.“
These aren’t new regulations and have applied to the different Electrical installations that fall under the BS7671 wiring regulations long before the inception of dedicated EV chargers in the home or workplace.
I believe so, whilst it does cost 60% more than the non EV version – it saves installing 2 separate cables and means installations looks a lot neater, especially when used with the near invisible super Linian clip.
